The Shell is a complete experience, both entertaining and enriching, elevated by the synergy of music, sound, architecture, and food. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the original July 2020 opening has been postponed until summer 2021. At that time, The Shell will activate Embarcadero Marina Park South year-round as a community gathering space and a landmark waterfront attraction.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The VP, Marketing will shape and lead an innovative, best-in-class marketing function capable of supporting the Symphony’s marketing, ticket sales, communications, public relations, and social media needs into the future. Maximizing technology and tapping into creative new approaches and tactics, this role leads an institutional goal of increasing total household participation and revenue. The Symphony is at a pivotal moment in its evolution, having grown significantly in the past 6 years and also facing key challenges, most notably, the current global pandemic. The VP, Marketing is a key strategic leader in generating revenue and deepening relationships with existing and engaging new audiences and community members who enjoy the wonder of live music and transformational learning experiences and are instrumental in shaping the culture of the region.
The Vice President, Marketing reports to the Chief Executive Officer, Martha Gilmer. Reporting to the VP, Marketing is a team of that includes the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications; Director of Marketing & Communications; Marketing Manager; Marketing Coordinator; Concert Commentator; Digital Systems Analyst; Group Sales Manager; Ticket Services Manager; Assistant Ticket Services Manager; Assistant Ticketing Manager; and Ticket Services Associates. He/she/they will also manage relationship with outside vendors and consultants.
FUNDING: San Diego Symphony has grown dramatically, and in FY2019 had annual operating budget of approximately $28M. The Symphony is in an active campaign to raise $90M for capital, programmatic and endowment needs.
Track record of creating and implementing innovative strategies and tactics to increase awareness and reposition a major organization, ideally in a not-for-profit performing arts space.
Success in differentiating the customer experience in a competitive market for classical and commercial music.
Knowledgeable about current and emerging best practice and new approaches in technology, digital marketing, data mining, awareness and brand loyalty, distributed media content, and customer experience.
Success leading, managing, and inspiring staff and colleagues in a complex, high-performing, fast-paced setting.
Significant experience with public and media relations and implementing strategic communications plans.
Ability to translate high concepts into a broad variety of readily accessible, attention-grabbing communications in various formats.
Experience managing a complex marketing department with a substantial revenue budget.
Demonstrated success generating significant growth in subscription and single-ticket revenue for a performing arts organization.
Experience working with an institutional advancement team and an understanding of philanthropy and sponsorship.
Polished and persuasive written and verbal communication skills.
A genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Familiarity with Tessitura and other commonly used software programs in the performing arts community.
Genuine interest in the cultural community and in music in particular.
Passion for the performing arts.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred, but not required.
