The George Mason University Office of Marketing and Communications, within the Volgenau School of Engineering (VSE), invites applications for a Graphics Specialist. The Graphics Specialist will work collaboratively with the VSE Communications team to conceptualize, scope, and create marketing and communication materials that position the school's programs, partnerships, faculty, and students for increased visibility. The Graphics Specialist will leverage new and existing technologies and design techniques to develop creative, impactful, results-driven pieces within the Mason and VSE branding and messaging guidelines.
The position will work in both group and individual settings to scope projects, create drafts and approve materials, negotiate with vendors, and supervise production of work. The Graphics Specialist will track project progress and completion by providing periodic and proactive updates.
The work will range in depth, from simple flyers and signage to more complicated layout and custom projects. The individual should be cognizant of journalistic writing and social media best practices. The position reports directly to the Director of Communications.
Graphics Project Creation and Production:
Develop literature, posters, advertisements, flyers, and other visual media using software available;
Assist with concept, design, and layout of the School of Engineering Annual Report and department newsletters;
Shoot and edit photography.
Establish Print and Digital Templates:
Establish and maintain VSE brand standards for template production of course and program materials, signage, digital marketing including web graphics, social media kits, logos, and other items as required.
Special Projects, Events, Image Collection and Curation:
Serve as curator and custodian for VSE image and graphics library;
Take photographs and video of school events, activities and interviews, potentially to include the need to set up and take down the lighting kit;
Work with University Marketing and Communications teams to collect and use graphics within Mason brand standards.
Collaborate and communicate with faculty and staff in various areas to produce materials and programs to market and promote George Mason University, especially, but not limited to, VSE departments, centers, programs, students, alumni and faculty.
Other Duties as Assigned:
Seek out opportunities to improve office operations and make recommendations for their implementation;
Take on additional work as needed to ensure smooth operations of the unit and VSE.
Demonstrated ability to use Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro);
A working knowledge or ability to learn, the SiteMasonry (Drupal8) and other Content Management Software (CMS) programs;
Ability to learn new software and project management applications;
Ability to articulate complex thoughts into infographics to be used both on digital media and within printed pieces (Data Visualization);
Knowledge of the production process for printed materials, marketing/promo materials (i.e. cups, t-shirts) and advertisements;
Demonstrated ability to work independently, follow direction, and take initiative;
Superior communication and organizational skills;
Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds;
Ability to troubleshoot basic technology issues;
Familiarity with the process of video production and photography.
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, New Media, or similar degree, or combination of work experience in closely related field;
Demonstrated experience creating marketing and promotional materials for a higher education environment;
Familiarity with the Associated Press Stylebook.
