Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, and working closely with the communications team, the Assistant Director, Digital Communications is responsible for managing the social channels and web presence for Columbia College, and in some cases, Columbia Engineering, the two largest undergraduate schools of Columbia University. The Assistant Director creates, implements, and manages web communication strategies to raise brand awareness, tell compelling stories that support the College???s mission, and ensure the community stays informed throughout the academic year. This individual will partner closely with other units of the College and the University to ensure content is representative and relevant to work happening throughout the community and institution and that the web experience is user-friendly, engaging and relevant. The Assistant Director will also manage content strategy in the College???s social media channels, in order to engage the community and monitor the pulse of community conversation. This individual will contribute thought leadership to planning processes and cross-functional multi-channel campaigns to optimize user experience, increase engagement and elevate overall community engagement.
Ensures that the Columbia College and affiliated web properties serve as engaging and user-friendly digital experiences that students, faculty, families and prospective students can utilize to connect to and learn about the College and Columbia at large. Continuously review and evolve the web with an eye towards improving branding, navigation and editorial storytelling that support the College???s mission and community. This individual will both source and help develop content, as needed, working closely with members of the team who are writers, designers and channel experts. Monitor user traffic and engagement.
Oversee and manage social media channels for Columbia College to uphold school reputation and brand, sustain community engagement and grow followership through relevant content strategy and campaign integration. Develop robust social media strategies within major communications campaigns throughout the year that build community participation such as graduation and student orientation.
With monthly editorial calendars and marketing strategy inputs, generate, edit, publish and share engaging content that elevates College brand to grow awareness and drive to institutional goals. Incorporate promotions, contests, take-overs and more.
Execute social media components of integrated digital marketing campaigns.
Engage with and respond to followers in channels, to drive engagement and satisfaction.
Monitor and benchmark channel trends and track channel and drive-to metrics.
Provides consultation to colleagues throughout the College to maintain brand standards and integration with central properties. Partner closely with IT to identify and implement new capabilities that help to improve website journeys and experiences. Collaborates with units to advise and support partners with strategic needs that relate to web development.
Perform other related duties as necessary.
Bachelor???s degree or its equivalent required.
A minimum of 2-4 years of related experience.
Must have experience in communications, digital marketing, journalism, social media or working as a content manager or web specialist.
Basic technical knowledge of HTML, web publishing and accessibility standards required.
Must be detail oriented, calm under pressure, strong writer and have the ability to think creatively while working both independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple responsibilities, working collaboratively with people at all levels.
Strong editorial and journalistic sensibility with a strong sense of social media trends, algorithms and best practices.
Some graphic design experience preferred.
Able to learn and adapt to new technologies and trends.
Working knowledge of front-end web development, including content management systems such as Drupal is preferred.
Experience with Google Analytics and professional familiarity with higher education constituencies, structure, and administration desirable.
Also valuable: Full Adobe suite, audio and/or video editing.
