The Director of Marketing and Communications is the chief marketing strategist for NOVA Parks, one of the nation’s leading regional park systems. From developing the brand of NOVA Parks, to marketing the many facilities, programs, and services, this position requires a great understanding of all forms of marketing.
NOVA Parks generates 87% of its operating revenues from park enterprises including three holiday light shows that attract 500K people a year, three golf courses, five waterparks, two family campgrounds, four reception event centers, overnight accommodations, marinas, and more. While NOVA Parks is governmental, the organizational culture is entrepreneurial and innovative. Marketing revenue generating operations is central to the business model. At the same time, NOVA Parks is a leader in nature conservation with over 12,000 acres of parkland and many of the most iconic sites in the region. This system includes one of the most popular trails in the Nation, the W&OD, a colonial museum, five Civil War battlefields, and a nature center to name just a few.
Develop and Implement Marketing and Promotions Plan and Strategy: Working with staff, contractors, and partners, this position will provide the strategic direction for the marketing efforts of NOVA Parks. The focus is growing the core businesses and developing the brand equity that drives the public perception of NOVA Parks and its many facilities and programs. Some of the specific responsibilities will include:
Manage a department that includes a Graphic Designer and Social Media Coordinator, as well as Information Technology Administrator and Information Technology Technician.
Provide expertise, direction, supervision, oversight, and support for all areas of marketing, promotions, and park user/customer development.
Formulate and manage marketing and promotions plans and strategies.
Oversee marketing budget, expenditures, and invoice processing.
Identify personnel, contract services, and other resources necessary to achieve NOVA Parks’ marketing goals and objectives.
Generate earned media coverage that builds the brand and public awareness of NOVA Parks.
Provide expertise, leadership, and support in developing and implementing programs, campaigns, and promotions that will increase public usage and visitation as well as NOVA Parks' overall visibility.
Oversee the development and publication of brochures, flyers, and other informational materials.
Ensure cross-promotion among NOVA Parks’ parks and facilities.
Develop and implement plans for paid advertising, in-kind trades, tie-in, and other promotional techniques to achieve maximum use and visibility of NOVA Parks’ facilities and services.
Establish and implement a system that enables NOVA Parks to track, analyze, and evaluate marketing and promotions performance.
Develop the brand equity that highlights the many contributions to the region that NOVA Parks is responsible for.
Support community outreach efforts associated with major NOVA Parks development projects, and/or new facilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (minimum)
Education: Graduation from an accredited college/university with a bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field. Graduate degrees and coursework preferred.
Experience: Seven years of senior experience in marketing and promotions, communications or public relations work, or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices used in marketing and promotions.
Knowledge of communications and media relations.
Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and web site development.
Considerable ability to make clear and effective oral and written presentations.
Considerable ability to gather, edit, and consolidate materials and prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and presentations with excellent writing skills.
Considerable skill and ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with the public and the media.
Ability to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of NOVA Parks, its history, traditions, and policies.
Experience in personnel management.
Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Availability to work evenings and weekends to attend special events, ceremonies, and Board meetings.
