Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Assistant Director, Media Relations. Reporting to the Director of Communications & Marketing, responsibilities include and are not limited to the following.
Manages the overall media relations plan for Rutgers-Newark integrated public relations strategy (involving print, web and digital platforms, paid and free media) that effectively advances the mission of the school;
Manages all editorial content and oversees the planning, production, and distribution of content through the Rutgers-Newark website, PR channels, social media, print media, YouTube, and other outlets;
Ensures all publication methods are measurable and analyzes analytics to inform communications strategy. Builds media, university, and other relationships that serve to increase the profile of faculty and the school;
Identifies and keeps abreast of student, faculty, and alumni activities and accomplishments to publicize and promote;
Provides public relations expertise and in-depth, subject specific advice to Rutgers-Newark faculty;
Serves as the primary liaison to the media for all subjects;
Selects and pitches stories to the media that generate buzz about the school. Interviews, research, and writes original feature articles that promote faculty research, share student experiences, build brand awareness, and support recruitment efforts;
Manages and leverages Meltwater, a media monitoring and media intelligence service that enables the university to further build its brand by listening to and engaging Rutgers-Newark constituents and the media;
Liaise with the Department of University Communications and Marketing (UCM);
Designs and produces a wide variety of communications including news articles, graphics, media guides, acknowledgments, mailings, press releases, newsletters, and other information;
Actively negotiates costs and services with vendors and freelance writers;
Manages the Digital Content and Social Media Manager to further communications goals.
Completes work independently, with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results;
Performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of public relations and marketing, and a solid understanding, use, and application of communications concepts, theories, principles, practices, and terminology;
Networks with professional counterparts inside and outside the university;
Provides counsel and advice to the Director of Communications and Marketing in support of the school's strategic plan;
Services the Rutgers University – Newark community
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in public relations, communication, marketing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates skill, comprehensive knowledge, and understanding, as appropriate, of public relations, promotions, marketing, proofreading, writing, editing, public communications, coordination, and project management.
The position also requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in public relations, excellent communication skills, and strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working in higher education, public relations, or in an editorial role in publishing is preferred but not essential to the position. Digital marketing experience is also preferred.
Specialized software required for this position includes Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Suite.
