The Senior Graphic Designer will report to the Senior Director, Creative and is responsible for providing graphic design, ideas and solutions for publications, campus environments, websites and marketing projects as they pertain to building and growing a memorable and positive impression of the Carnegie Mellon University brand.
As Senior Graphic Designer for CMU's Marketing & Communications Division, you will be responsible for supplying creative strategies/design solutions to various collateral, campus environments, web sites, email marketing, , specialty products, presentations, videos and event communications. You will partner with clients regularly. You will act as brand champion by monitoring and guiding the campus community with visual identity strategies and projects. Working in an open design environment, you will consult with the creative team through critiques and problem-solving efforts.
The Senior Graphic Designer will deliver to the highest level of design and production standards, guidelines and processes. You will show a solid understanding of measuring project successes to develop standard practices for future projects. You are tech savvy, keep current with various design and office software, and demonstrate a high level of proficiency with these software/tools. Strong communication and interpersonal skills will be key to success in this role. The Senior Graphic Designer will demonstrate exceptional written and oral communications skills, excellent researching and analytical skills, strong reasoning and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent organizational skills. The Senior Graphic Designer performs independently and with team members. In most cases, you will work within established processes. However, unique challenges are common.
This Senior Graphic Designer in the division of University Communications and Marketing is primarily focused on connecting the physical and digital experiences on campus. In this role, you will improve the brand experience in spaces such as the Welcome Center, residence halls, and public spaces throughout campus. With an ever-evolving digital world, this position will ideate and create digital experiences which also connect the user to the brand. You will produce quality design or creative solutions for the University Communications & Marketing division and for units throughout the university. These include:
Marketing campaigns, environmental designs, publications, specialty products and email and web site design
Brand management representative in maintaining identity system and champion for proper usage of brand assets across all users of brand, internally and externally
Work closely with project managers on all jobs and prioritize independently
Leads and/or actively participates in client and team meetings
On-going training in the field
As necessary, hire and direct freelancers for a range of projects
Art direct supporting designers
Art direct photographers and videographers
Facilitate creative brainstorming or creative sessions involving writers, illustrators, photographers PMs/strategic partners and crucial faculty members
Provide insight to the division in areas of technical and creative development
Present creative and creative rationale to clients concerning graphic design of project
Prioritizes work based on customer needs, job requirements, etc.
Work closely creative director to maintain studio/agency level quality regarding design trends and technologies

Bachelor's degree in graphic design, fine arts/concentration in graphic or relevant field and/or equivalent experience required. Bachelors' degree in Graphic design highly preferred.
A minimum of 5 years-experience in graphic design, marketing, advertising or related field.
Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge

This position requires working within budget constraints, inflexible client deadlines and willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
