Job Summary/Basic Function: The senior writer/editor has responsibility to promote the University and its brand, including academic and co-curricular offerings, rankings, proof points, outcomes, testimonials, and other related topics, across all mediums including print and digital media. On an annual basis, the senior writer/editor will play a significant role in the development of hundreds of pieces of marketing collateral to broadly serve the University and its many and diverse internal partners and key stakeholders. The senior writer/editor will make major writing contributions to publications and other marketing projects, including key recruitment pieces for the University, its colleges, and the hundreds of academic programs available at Wright State.
The senior writer/editor will also create copy for programs and events and contribute messaging for the design of print advertising and other related projects. The senior writer/editor will have responsibility for supporting the University's strategic planning initiatives through the development and completion of key initiatives and through the written word. The position contributes greatly to the day-to-day operations of the Office of Marketing by leading editorial processes and ensuring brand adherence, creativity, efficiency and quality in the work of the department.
Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, or extensive work experience as a writer or journalist
Minimum of five years of experience as a writer in a marketing, public relations or advertising role; experience writing/editing copy for print and digital media
Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to write in a range of voices and styles for varied projects with diverse audiences; ability to synthesize and concisely communicate complex subject matter
Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills
Proficiency in project management and editorial software and tools
Effective problem solving and project management skills; detail-oriented and organized
Capacity to work on multiple projects simultaneously and establish priorities
Ability to think and act independently and work to aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Ability to create and sustain a professional and collaborative work environment
Submission of a writing portfolio required for participants of the interview process
Writing and editing exercises may be administered by the Office of Marketing for candidates invited to interview
Essential Functions and percent of time::
Writing and Content Development (60%)
Write and edit copy for marketing pieces, annual reports, recruitment and retention collateral, billboards, radio spots, newspapers, and magazines.
Develop concepts, as well as write copy, in alignment with the University's brand.
Work with marketing staff and clients and stakeholders to develop marketing campaigns.
Develop story ideas and write feature pieces for major publications.
Write and edit copy and perform content analysis for Wright State University websites.
Work closely with marketing web team to devise imaginative and intuitive solutions that increase web traffic.
Utilize best practices and industry-leading trends in print and digital marketing to create collateral that clearly and creatively articulates and elevates Wright State's mission, successes, and value proposition.
Editorial and Project Management (30%)
Manage and oversee the editorial process to ensure quality control and brand adherence for projects that are critical to student recruitment, retention, and Wright State's brand and mission.
Guide colleagues and other key internal and external stakeholders to ensure quality and accurate content and copy, and provide feedback and expertise, when needed, for marketing projects. Ensure marketing projects are shepherded through the editorial process in a timely manner to meet the deadlines and budgetary expectations.
Assess and report on the effectiveness of marketing pieces, where possible, and provide outcomes of projects for the Office of Marketing.
Other Duties (10%)
Complete a variety of marketing-related tasks, as needed, to support the marketing of the University.
Work with the Director of Marketing and other leadership on key and special initiatives to advance Wright State's brand and market presence.
