Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or related field. Four (4) years of full time experience writing, editing and managing content (paid & organic) across social media platforms, including two years supervisory experience. Experience optimizing website and social media channels for SEO and/or usability. Experience with social media listening tools, such as Netbase. Project Management experience including tasks such as developing creative briefs, coordinating project teams, managing deliverables, publishing and/or assessing outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Additional years (5+) of full time experience writing, editing and managing content (paid & organic) across social media platforms, including two years supervisory experience. Experience developing/executing integrated digital marketing programs. Experience within a higher education setting. Experience with landing page creation and user experience optimization. Experience leading analytics assessment.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Sr. Manager, Social Media & Engagement, reporting to the Sr. Director of Digital Strategy in the division of Marketing and Communications, is responsible for leading, managing, planning, and executing strategy and policy for Stony Brook University's social media platforms and communications, both as the owner of SBU's central accounts, and by providing guidance to other departments and programs that have a social media presence. In addition, individually or with a team, the position is responsible for coordinating, writing, producing, and analyzing digital content for social media with a focus on short-term pieces and posts designed to support mission, market brand messaging, and to share information across channels.
- Writing, managing and executing stories and posts against a content calendar for SBU's primary social media accounts; Find opportunities for engagement and reposting/proposing social stories and coverage of events that support the content team's calendar themes and target audience; Working with photographers, designers and videographers to create multimedia content designed for cross-platform integration to support SBU's brand pillars and mission, in addition to creating this multimedia content yourself when necessary; Social media posting, campaigning, networking and influencer building as well as coordinate affiliate accounts across the university. Serving as a coordinator of social coverage across communications, media relations and marketing; Lead bimonthly social media check-in meetings with others across SBU who manage social.; Ensure the SBU logo and look/feel is the same across all social media channels (updating based on platform when appropriate). Use best practices to make sure main SBU social media accounts show the most relevant and current information and branding in about sections/bios, ensure pinned posts and story highlights are regularly updated and swapped out, etc; Monitor and respond to reviews, comments, tags, and/or direct messages (when appropriate) on Google (for SBU) and main SBU social media pages. Supervise one role - Social Media Specialist who works on the daily assignments related to the above.
- Build and manage a robust digital marketing/social media strategy and policy that amplifies our multimedia communications and assists in driving stakeholder engagement across all SBU channels. Enforce this policy and run best practice training for affiliate accounts across SBU when necessary. Using the latest social media trends and functionalities, consistently come up with new features and campaigns to elevate SBU's social presence (livestreams, expert videos, etc.).
- Oversee SBU's paid social media advertising; developing content, managing placement and optimizing advertising as needed, including working with outside agencies to make sure all paid social programs are running smoothly.
- Work closely with Executive Communications and the Sr. Director, Digital Strategy to manage President McInnis's social media presence across all channels.
- Working with the Assoc. Director of Crisis Communications to identify and monitor potential crises and make recommendations such as when it is appropriate to go dark or resume posting during times of crisis. Working with the Senior Director of Digital Strategy, Senior Manager of Social Media for SBM, and Assoc. Director of Crisis Communications, assess existing social media monitoring, management and analytics tools; identify gaps; and evaluate alternative options as needed (managing budget as appropriate).
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
