This administrative position supports and promotes the scientific efforts of the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, which is housed in the Baskin School of Engineering. The Institute encompasses a range of diverse projects run by a wide roster of faculty leadership, research investigators and affiliated faculty. Projects and initiatives promoted include the UCSC Genome Browser, the Haussler-Salama Lab, Braingeneers, Computational Genomics Lab and Platform, the Paleogenomics Lab, the UCSC Human Paleogenomics Lab, the Brooks Lab, The Office of Diversity, CALeDNA, Braingeneers, Pathogen Genomics, Live Cell Genomics, Human Pangenome, California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3), the Treehouse Cancer Initiative and the Genome 10K Project.
Directly and indirectly, the Institute supports the scientific efforts of investigators of the UCSC Genomics Institute, which involves approximately 110 personnel (which includes approximately 60 career staff, 10 academic non-faculty members, 30 graduate student researchers, and a handful post-doctoral scholars and undergraduate employees), participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). In addition, the Genomics Institute provides funding support for approximately 80 additional personnel for Genomics Institute-related projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private donor and foundation awards and gifts.
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Associate Director of Communications runs all aspects of marketing and communications for the Institute, including but not limited to public relations, social media, graphic design, and website management.
This position is part of a collegial administrative team dedicated to providing accurate, analytical, and timely communications to support and enable scientific and technical advancements.

JOB DUTIES 70% -
In collaboration with senior leadership in the Genomics Institute, Baskin School of Engineering, UCSC campus divisions, and University Relations' (central campus) communications & public affairs staff, initiate and expand the scope of media and promotional coverage for the Institute and related projects.
Perform and manage complex internal and external communications for the Institute, including identifying, developing, and managing the content of the Institute and related websites, responding to requests for new and revised content and assigning work to webmasters (Institute, BSOE, campus) to maintain and improve the integrity, cohesion and visual appeal of the sites.
Develop, optimize messaging surrounding the Institute's research, effectively reach our target audiences and build the Institute's presence using minimal resources; develop and deploy effective and efficient processes and strategies to identify and disseminate information related to the Institute and associated research groups and partners' events and news.
Create shareable, on-brand content designed to build the Institute specifically -- and BSOE and UCSC more generally -- as a leading voice in genomics; monitor conversations and competition, grow our audience and engagement, and establish strategies for engagement.
Write, edit, design, produce, monitor, and report on efficacy of informational materials with a focus on digital content, especially websites; social media and email marketing with a focus on maximizing reach of event announcement and news coverage. Additional duties may include preparing and updating slide decks, and supporting reports for various types of presentations, including proposals and progress reports related to gift solicitations and sponsored projects.
Regularly produce materials including but not limited to press releases, signage, leaflets, posters, flyers, videos, slide decks, annual reports, and related promotional and educational materials for general audience promotion, donor development, and recruitment.
15% - Internal Communications
Perform and manage internal communications for the Institute, including identifying, developing, and managing content essential to organizational administration and operations, for a staff and affiliate audience, responding to requests for new and revised content and managing workflow in order to maintain the organizational integrity of our Team Resources intranet, which is our online business manual.
15% - Brand Management & Project Management
Maintain stylistic consistency in conformance with campus, Engineering and Institute guidelines, synchronization of branding with university efforts. Identify collaborators within the organization and on-campus for help and feedback, source vendors, and obtain comparative quotes.
QUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Advanced knowledge and fluency with Google Drive and Google Apps, Microsoft Office applications. Proficiency in a range of basic digital marketing tools and techniques, including photography, screen and print design and page layout; WordPress, SEO practices; using analytics to optimize web, social media, and email marketing efforts.
Advanced knowledge of the Genomics Institute and its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long- and short-term strategic communication plans.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries, which involve sensitive information requiring the exercise of judgement and discretion.
